Washington Sundar belongs to one of the rarest breeds of cricketers. An all-rounder is someone who brings stability to the team. Washington Sundar can bowl in the power plays. He can hold the innings in the middle overs by bowling a few tight overs. He can score fiercely while opening, and also, he can be used as a pinch hitter.

The Rise of Washington Sundar
Sundar is a complete cricketer who rose through the ranks during the U-19 world cup in Bangladesh. He went unsold during IPL 2017 auction but later roped in by Rising Pune Supergiants s the replacement of injured Ravichandran Ashwin. Washington Sundar played 11 matches and took 8 wickets. More than the stats, it was his accuracy and bravery to bowl in powerplays that impressed the most.
As a result of his tremendous performance, he was acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018 for a mammoth 3.2 crores. He played 7 matches for RCB where he couldn’t replicate his previous year heroics. He was costly as he leaked runs with an economy of 9.2.

He hardly got chances to bat and showcase what lies in his armory. People might not be aware of his batting capabilities. In 2017 TNPL, he was the highest run scorer of the tournament and finished as 2nd in the list of top wicket-takers. He single-handedly almost won the tournament for Tuti Patriots. In his golden run, he scored a century in TNPL which is never an easy feat in a T20 game.
Sundar might have been bestowed as the undisputed king in Tamil Nadu Premier League. But he just couldn’t get the same amount of contingency in IPL. RCB has failed to qualify in both seasons and the biggest factor that affected them is surely the team combination. In this season, they stuck with Parthiv Patel as an opener where they could have used Washington Sundar. Along with the batting, Sundar might have solved their powerplay bowling woes if shown confidence.
Youngsters like Washington Sundar needs to be groomed. He has an enormous talent which isn’t utilized at the bigger stage. All he needs is his team management’s confidence. Sundar has definitely the age factor in his side. Washington Sundar has been a consistent part of India-A squad where he has to fight for a spot with his peers Krunal Pandya and Deepak Hooda.
What worries the most is how these youngsters will face these tough times without being tested. Same goes with Mumbai Indians wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan who has not stepped a foot wrong, yet finding it difficult to be included in playing XI. Rightly said, cricket can be harsh sometimes, not only the game but from the moment of auction.
Not sure if he would have created the same impact which Moeen Ali has created, Sundar surely deserved a quite more chance in the playing XI.
